Can agility training actually keep my dog healthy?
You've seen the videos: dogs weaving through ladders, hopping over hurdles, looking like four-legged ninjas. It's cute, but is it doing anything for their health? The honest answer? Only if you're training the right thing. Most 'agility' routines are just fancy footwork. Real agility—the kind that prevents injuries and builds a resilient body—is a different beast entirely.
The problem with ladder drills
Ladder drills improve coordination, footwork, and reaction time—no argument there (NSCA). But they don't build raw power or max sprint speed. They're a tool, not a program. If your dog's entire 'agility' routine is a ladder, you're missing the point. The ladder is the warm-up, not the workout.
Worse, the ladder teaches pre-planned movement. Your dog knows the pattern. Real life—and real sport—is unpredictable. A dog that can't react to a sudden turn or a shifting surface is a dog that gets hurt.
Real agility is reactive
Sports scientists define agility as a rapid whole-body movement in response to a stimulus (Sheppard and Young, 2006). That's the key word: response. Change-of-direction speed—the kind you test with a T-test or 5-10-5 shuttle—is only a piece of it. The cognitive piece—reading the situation, deciding, then moving—is just as important. And it's trainable.
A study on basketball players found that response time and decision-making time had large to very large relationships with reactive agility performance (Scanlan et al., 2014). In fact, response time alone predicted reactive agility time. That means if you want a dog that can react to a thrown ball, a sudden stop, or another dog cutting in front, you need to train the brain, not just the feet.
The health payoff: injury prevention
Here's where it gets personal. Change-of-direction actions are a leading cause of non-contact ACL injuries in human athletes (University of Salford). The same mechanics apply to your dog's knees. When a dog plants a paw and cuts hard, the knee joint takes a beating. But here's the good news: training that specifically targets change-of-direction technique can reduce injury risk.
In one study, 8 weeks of change-of-direction technique training cut ACL injury-risk markers—like peak knee abduction moment and lateral trunk lean—during a 135-degree cut (Mohr et al., 2024). The training group also executed sharper angles. That's not just performance; that's protection.
And it doesn't stop at young athletes. A Cochrane review found that exercise reduces falls in older adults by 23% (Sherrington et al., 2019). Balance and functional exercises cut falls by 24%. The same principle applies to senior dogs: keep their reactive agility sharp, and you keep them on their feet longer.
But isn't any movement good?
You might argue that any agility training is better than none. True, but not all training is equal. Generic agility training has its place—it can improve skill transfer and reduce injury in long-term development (Liefeith et al., 2018). But if you only do ladder drills, you're training a narrow skill. Your dog gets better at ladders, not at life.
And here's a counterintuitive finding: reactive agility and pre-planned change-of-direction speed share almost no common variance (Matlák et al., 2016). That means a dog that's fast on the ladder might be slow to react on the field. If you want a healthy, agile dog, you need both—but the reactive part is what keeps them safe.
What I'd actually do
Here's my prescription: ditch the ladder as the main event. Use it for 5 minutes as a warm-up, then move to reactive drills. Set up cones and call directions randomly. Throw a ball and have your dog chase it, but change direction mid-play. Use a wobble board or a balance pad. Teach your dog to stop and pivot on command.
And don't forget the strength work. Agility without strength is a recipe for injury. Include jumps, but keep them low and controlled. Start at 50-60% effort to master form, just like the experts recommend for humans (NSCA). Train twice a week, 20-30 minutes per session, and you'll see the difference in your dog's health—not just in their footwork.
