You've probably seen those shiny agility ladders at the pet store and thought, “If I just get my dog running through that, they'll be a star.” But here's the truth: agility isn't about footwork patterns on a ladder. It's about a rapid whole-body movement in response to a stimulus—a rabbit darting, a ball bouncing, a competitor shifting. That's the definition sports scientists settled on (Sheppard and Young, 2006). And the research is clear: pre-planned changes of direction and reactive agility—where your dog has to react to something unpredictable—share almost no common variance. In one study, the correlation between change-of-direction speed and reactive agility was as low as r=0.03 (Matlák et al., 2016). So if you only practice predictable ladder drills, you're training your dog to run a memorized pattern, not to think on their feet.
This article is for dog owners who want real agility—the kind that shows up in a trial, on a hike, or in a game of fetch. Not the kind that looks pretty on Instagram. I'm going to give you five drills that build reactive agility, coordination, and injury resistance. And I'm going to tell you exactly why the ladder is the last thing you need.
Who This Is For
This is for the owner who wants a dog that's quick, nimble, and safe—whether you're competing in agility, playing disc, or just want a dog that doesn't crash into the coffee table. If you're already drilling your dog on a ladder every day, stop. You're building foot speed, not agility. The ladder drills do improve footwork and coordination (NSCA), but they don't teach your dog to react to a changing environment. And that's the whole point.
Drill #1: The Two-Toy Reaction Game
This is the foundation. You need two toys that your dog loves—say a ball and a tug. Stand in a clear space, maybe 10 feet apart from your dog. Hold both toys behind your back. Suddenly toss one toy to your dog's left, and the instant they commit to it, call them and toss the other to the right. The goal is not fetch; it's to make your dog constantly re-evaluate where the reward is coming from. You're teaching them to read a cue (your toss) and change direction mid-stride. This mimics reactive agility, where the stimulus is unpredictable. In a study of basketball players, response time was the sole predictor of reactive agility (r=0.76) (Scanlan et al., 2014). Your dog's response time to your toss is the skill you're building.
Quick tip: Start with slow, obvious tosses. If your dog is just standing there, you're moving too fast. Build up speed only when they're nailing the change of direction.
Drill #2: The 5-10-5 Shuffle (Modified)
Borrowed from human agility testing, the 5-10-5 shuttle (also called the pro-agility) is a simple three-cone drill. Set up three cones or markers 5 yards apart in a straight line. Start your dog at the middle cone, and have them sprint to one end cone, then immediately sprint to the opposite end, and finish back at the middle. In human testing, this is scored for time, but for your dog, we're focusing on the sharp turns and acceleration. This is a classic change-of-direction drill. The NSCA uses this test to assess agility, and it requires no equipment other than three cones. For your dog, use treats or a toy as a target at each cone. The key is to teach your dog to plant their feet and push off hard, not to round the cone in a wide arc. This builds the physical capacity for direction changes, which is the sub-component of agility that's trainable (University of Salford).
What can go wrong: If you push this too hard, your dog could slip on a smooth floor or overextend a joint. Always do this on grass or a non-slip surface. And remember, this drill is pre-planned—your dog knows where the cones are. So it's not reactive agility. But it's a necessary base. You'll add the reaction in the next drill.
Drill #3: The 5-10-5 with a Cue
Now we make it reactive. Same three-cone setup, but you stand at the middle cone with a toy. Instead of sending your dog to a predetermined cone, you point or toss the toy to one side just as your dog starts moving. Your dog has to read your cue and change direction on the fly. This combines the physical change-of-direction with the cognitive component of responding to a stimulus. Studies show that reactive agility is largely a cognitive skill—decision-making time had a large relationship with reactive agility time (r=0.58) in basketball players (Scanlan et al., 2014). So you're literally training your dog's brain, not just their legs.
Drill #4: The Figure-Eight Weave
Set up four cones in a square, about 6 feet apart. Have your dog weave in a figure-eight pattern around the cones, but change the direction randomly. You can cue them with your body movement, a whistle, or a hand signal. This forces your dog to combine lateral movements, forward sprints, and sudden stops. It's a mini version of the Illinois test, which is a longer agility test that involves weaving around obstacles (NSCA). The figure-eight is great because it's unpredictable—you're the stimulus. Your dog has to watch you and adjust. This is the kind of drill that improves coordination and multi-directional speed, which the ladder also claims to do, but without the cognitive piece, the ladder is just a pattern. This drill is dynamic.
Drill #5: The Stop-and-Go
Finally, teach your dog to decelerate. This is the most overlooked skill. In a study with team-sport athletes, enforced-stopping deceleration training improved 40-meter sprint and change-of-direction ability (Lockie et al., 2014). For your dog, that means teaching them to come to a complete stop on command, from a full sprint, then immediately accelerate again. Start with a simple recall: run with your dog, then suddenly shout “Stop!” and have them sit or drop. Then release them to run again. This builds the braking strength that protects joints. Poor braking mechanics are implicated in ACL injuries in human athletes, and the same principles apply to dogs. Researchers found that technique training that emphasizes a wide lateral leg plant and limits knee valgus can reduce hazardous knee loading (University of Salford). For your dog, that means teaching them to plant their paws firmly and not to twist their knees.
Warning: Never do deceleration drills on a slippery surface. Your dog's paws aren't designed for hard stops on tile. Use grass or a rubber mat.
Why Ladders Fall Short
Let's be clear: ladder drills have their place. They improve footwork, coordination, and reaction time (NSCA). But they are not agility. They are pre-planned, low-load, and don't involve any decision-making. And the research shows that reactive agility and pre-planned change-of-direction speed are largely independent (Matlák et al., 2016). So if you want a dog that can react to a squirrel darting across the path, you need to train reactions, not just foot patterns.

And if you want to measure progress, time your dog on the 5-10-5 shuttle once a month, just like the pros do (NSCA). But always remember: agility is a whole-body response to a stimulus, not a footwork pattern. Train the brain, and the body will follow.
